Rumsfeld offered to resign twice

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld submitted his resignation twice last spring as the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal unfolded, he told CNN.

Rumsfeld told CNN's Larry King, "I submitted my resignation to President Bush two times during that period."

Bush rejected the offers.

Rumsfeld told the Senate Armed Services Committee last year that if he thought resigning would help the Pentagon, he would step down.
