NRA targets Illinois handgun bans

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The National Rifle Association is taking aim at Chicago's handgun prohibitions and may test the governor's commitment to gun-control, a report said.

The Chicago Tribune said the NRA would seek support for legislation to permit residents of Chicago and other communities that ban handgun ownership to allow their residents to keep firearms in private homes for self-defense.

The legislation would also hold communities liable for injuries to residents who claim they could have defended themselves had they been allowed to carry handguns.

Gov. Rob Blagojevich is expected to support tough gun-control legislation backed by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Last year, Illinois' Democratic-controlled Legislature passed a bill permitting a homeowner to claim self-defense if a handgun was used against an intruder in violation of a local handgun ban.

The governor's veto was overridden and the bill became law this year.
