Kinky runs for Texas governor

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Texas humorist Kinky Friedman Thursday tossed his hat in the race for governor, saying he needs the closet space at the governor's mansion.

Friedman, an independent, mixed the serious and comedic in his announcement before a crowd of about 200 supporters in front of the Alamo, WOAI-AM, San Antonio, reported.

"Don't worry about my lack of experience," he said. "Trust me. I'm a Jew. I'll hire good people."

Friedman is an author, columnist, songwriter and musician. He also operates an animal refuge at his Texas ranch.

Friedman said he plans to address serious issues during his campaign, but he will have to raise 40,500 signatures to actually get on the ballot next year.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry is expected to seek re-election, but he may be challenged from within his own party. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn are weighing the race.
