Bangladesh strike ends in violence

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A nationwide strike in Bangladesh, which paralyzed daily life, has ended after 60 hours with dozens injured in clashes between police and protesters.

The shutdown disrupted economic activities, road transport and train services, the Bangladeshi Daily Star reported Tuesday.

The Awami League, the main opposition party, and its allies called the strike to protest the killing of former Finance Minister Shah A.M.S. Kibria and four Awami League activists in a grenade attack in the Habiganj district Thursday.

No arrests have been made, the BBC reported. Awami League supporters blame the government for Kibria's death. The government denies the charge and has asked the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to help find the killer.

The Bangladeshi Daily Star reported Tuesday that a new strike will begin this week. The last day of the new protest, Feb. 6, coincides with the beginning of the two-day summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation in the capital, Dhaka.
