S.Korea, Japan, China write history book

TOKYO, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Scholars, teachers and historians in China, Japan and South Korea have announced they will publish a jointly-written textbook in May.

The textbook, tentatively titled "East Asia modern history -- co-edited by China, Korea and Japan," was announced at a press conference in Tokyo, the Korea Times reported Sunday. The committee held meetings Saturday and Sunday to finalize their writings.

The committee has compiled works since 2002 with an aim to set up joint recognition of history among the three nations and prepare positive solutions for conflicts rather than criticize one another.

"It is the first time the three countries have worked together for history. It is not an exclusive description of history from a nationalist point of view, but a description seeking a future of coexistence by viewing history with an open mind and respecting each nation's opinion," the committee said.
