Feingold leaves option open for 2008 run

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., has said he is keeping the door open for a possible presidential run in 2008, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported Saturday.

Feingold was speaking in Florida at Daytona Beach's Tiger Bay Club. He said he will consider the option of running for president after "going around the country" working to return a Democrat to the White House.

The senator said he wants to be "part of the process" of identifying a candidate likely to succeed George W. Bush in 2008. He said his decision to whether to run will depend on "whether I feel I'll be the best candidate to win," he said, adding, "I'm not going to even worry about that right now."

In Bush's first term, Feingold opposed the president's policies on the Iraq war, USA Patriot Act, Medicare reform, education policy, environmental regulation, and abortion rights.

Feingold is best known nationally for co-sponsoring campaign finance reform legislation in 2002 with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
