USHIKU, Japan, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Chess Champion Bobby Fischer, jailed in Japan, has told an interviewer he believes his inability to get alcohol in jail is bad for his health.
"I can't get any alcohol in here, which I think is also bad for my health. I say that quite seriously. I think alcohol in moderation is very good for your body," he told Radio DZRH in the Philippines in the second of two separate interviews given on New Year's Eve and Jan. 17 and listed on the Internet overnight.
"Alcohol in moderation is very good for your health. It has a cleansing effect on your body, an antiseptic effect. It has many benefits. It's good for your heart and so on."
Fisher is being held in the Immigration Bureau Detention Center in Ushiku, Japan, after being arrested in July for using an allegedly revoked U.S. passport, reported the Mainichi Daily News Saturday.
He's also fighting a deportation order to the United States where he faces trial for playing a chess match in 1992 in Budva, Montenegro, in the former Yugoslavia, that violated economic sanctions that were in place at the time.
