GAZA, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Municipal elections kicked off in Gaza Thursday in the second phase of voting in the Palestinian territories.
Ousama Abou Safiya, director of the Elections Committee in Gaza, said the voting for members of 10 Gaza municipal councils started at 7 a.m. and has been going smoothly.
He said 478 candidates, including 181 women, are competing in the 10 municipalities whose 90,750 eligible voters can cast their votes at 48 polling stations.
Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad are largely participating in the poll, witnesses said.
The first phase of local elections took place in several municipalities in the West Bank at the end of last month, resulting in a sweeping victory for Hamas and Al Fatah, the mainstream movement of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
