Kennedy calls for troop removal from Iraq

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- In a speech criticizing Bush administration policy in Iraq, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., called Thursday for the removal of U.S. soldiers from that country.

Speaking at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Kennedy proposed a five-point plan for self-government in Iraq and called for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops following this week's elections, likening the current situation to the war in Vietnam.

Although he acknowledged the alternative strategy carries risks as well, Kennedy urged the Bush White House to "confront our own mistakes."

"Error is no excuse for its own perpetuation," he said. "Mindless determination does not make a better outcome likely. Setting a firm strategy for withdrawal may not guarantee success, but not doing so will almost certainly guarantee failure."
