Insurgents also detonated three car bombs within an hour around Kirkuk, killing five people and injuring six others. They targeted a police station, the mayor's office and a U.S. military convoy as part of a plan to derail Sunday's national election.

Along the road to Baghdad's airport, four multi-national soldiers were wounded by a car bomb as their convoy passed. The nationalities of the soldiers were not disclosed.

Three Baghdad schools to be used as polling centers in Sunday's election were attacked Tuesday night, an Iraqi police officer said, but a bomb planted at a fourth school was defused.
