STRASBOURG, France, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Russian parliamentarian Konstantin Kosachyov has welcomed the election of a new Euro-parliamentary leader from the Netherlands, Interfax news agency said.
Rene van der Linden of the Netherlands was elected president of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Monday, the news agency reported.
Kosachyov, leader of the Russian delegation to the council and chairman of the State Duma Committee for International Affairs, welcomed the move. He described van der Linden as an active champion of Russian involvement in European integration processes.
Russia's relations with the institutions of the European Union have become far more important to the Kremlin since the Copenhagen expansion process launched in 2001 added 10 additional countries to the now 25-nation EU.
