TDP leader Paritala Ravindra was shot dead Monday by unknown assailants at a district party office in the city of Anantapur. The party accused government leaders of being responsible for the attack and called a statewide strike.

Shops, businesses and schools remained closed in the state capital, Hyderabad, and other major cities and towns.

All public bus services were suspended after more than 500 buses were damaged since Monday, including about 100 buses that were set afire.

Wearing black badges, TDP activists took to the streets shouting slogans against Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Police arrested a number of party activists who were trying to disrupt road and rail traffic.

Massive security arrangements have been put into place throughout the state. Police in all districts have been put on high alert.
