Bush remembers Holocaust victims

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush said Tuesday the lesson of the Auschwitz death camp is that "evil is real, but hope endures."

Auschwitz, a Nazi camp in Poland during World War II, was liberated 60 years ago Tuesday.

The United Nations was holding a special remembrance ceremony at the camp's location to honor the millions of Jews and others who died in its gas chambers and from other brutalities inflicted by Nazi guards.

"In places like Auschwitz, evidence of the horror of the Holocaust has been preserved to help the world remember the past. We must never forget the cruelty of the guilty and the courage of the victims at Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps," Bush said in a special proclamation.

Added the president: "During the Holocaust, evil was systematic in its implementation and deliberate in its destruction. The 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz is an opportunity to pass on the stories and lessons of the Holocaust to future generations. The history of the Holocaust demonstrates that evil is real, but hope endures."

Bush called on Americans to remember the horrors of the Holocaust and to honor its victims.
