Temporary mideast truce reportedly reached

GAZA, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Palestinian militant groups have reportedly agreed to a temporary truce pending Israel's answer to terms for a permanent deal.

Ziad Abou Amro, a former minister and Palestinian Authority representative in the inter-Palestinian dialogue, told reporters in Gaza Monday the militant factions "offered to halt attacks against Israel for a few days."

He said the terms for a permanent deal include the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian cities, an end to the assassinations of militant leaders, an end to raids on suspected militant strongholds and the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Palestinian chief peace negotiator Saeb Erekat also said any cease-fire should be reciprocal.

"It is not going to be a gratis truce ... Nothing will be unilateral, but Israel is requested to return to the negotiating table to work out a joint declaration of a cease fire," Erekat told the official Palestinian Radio station.
