School bus nearly hijacked by children

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Authorities in west-central Pennsylvania are considering charges against two 11-year-old boys who allegedly tried to highjack a school bus at knifepoint.

Jefferson County authorities say one boy put a knife with a 3-inch blade next to the bus driver's throat Friday and told her to stop the vehicle and get out, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Saturday.

After the driver stopped the bus she told the boy to give her the knife and he did.

Authorities quickly arrived and four children, three 11-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl, were turned over to administrators at Mapleview Elementary School in Punxsutawney.

Two of the boys whom state police believe did most of the planning were taken into custody by Jefferson County juvenile justice authorities. The other two children were released to their parents.

Possible charges against the children could include attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, risking a catastrophe, harassment and disorderly conduct.

No one was injured and most of the children on the bus were unaware of the incident.
