Mehlman selected to lead RNC

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Ken Mehlman, who served as President Bush's campaign manager in 2004, was elected Wednesday to the chairman's spot for the Republican National Committee.

Mehlman, in his acceptance speech, set four goals for his term as chairman. Those are to enact the GOP reform agenda, increase the party membership, "elect the best candidates," and continue working the party's "grass-roots focus."

"If we can accomplish these four big goals, the Republican Party, the dominant part in America in 2002 and 2004, can cement our position for a generation. And in so doing, we will help accomplish great things for our nation," Mehlman said in a release.

Before serving as Bush's campaign manager in the latest election, Mehlman was the national field director for Bush-Cheney 2000 and has worked on some congressional staffs.

In addition to unanimously electing Mehlman to the RNC chairman's spot, committee members voted Jo Ann Davidson, from Ohio, as co-chairwoman.
