The jury could have convicted Carbonneau on more serious charges of murder or manslaughter. The criminally negligent homicide charge carries a possible sentence of six months and two years.

The jury will resume deliberations on punishment Wednesday.

Carbonneau was the first law officer in Harris County charged with murder in an on-duty killing in more than 10 years. He resigned in April after he was indicted.
