Bomb threats close Jakarta embassies

JAKARTA, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The British and Thai embassies in Indonesia were closed Friday following anonymous bomb threats against the diplomatic offices.

Jakarta city police stepped up security around the embassies, which are located in the same downtown neighborhood.

Police said that the embassies were warned Thursday evening that they would be targeted.

The British Foreign Office said in its travel warning Web site that services at the embassy as well as the British Consulate General would remain suspended while officials monitored the security situation.

The statement said that terrorists have shown in previous attacks -- such as those on the Australian Embassy and the Bali nightclubs -- that they have the means and the motivation to carry out their threats.

The Foreign Office said the closure would not affect aid operations in the Indonesian province of Aceh, the region hit by last month's tsunami, the BBC reported Friday.
