Polish, Russian leaders hold talks

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks by phone over the weekend to repair relations.

President Kwasniewski's office said Monday the two leaders had held a "warm" conversation Saturday aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The two countries, historic enemies for centuries, fell out last month over presidential elections in Ukraine, which were eventually won by pro-Western reformer Viktor Yushchenko. Russia accused Poland and the West of interfering in Ukrainian affairs and attempting to harm Russian interests.

Putin is due to attend a remembrance service in the southern Polish town of Auschwitz, the site of Nazi Germany's most notorious death camp in World War II.

Kwasniewski's office said Putin's Jan. 27 visit would provide another opportunity to improve relations between the two countries.
