Doris Matsui to run for husband's seat

SACRAMENTO, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Doris Matsui, the wife of the U.S. Rep. Bob Matsui, D-Calif., will run for the congressional seat her husband held for 26 years, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Matsui called friends and political figures in the Sacramento-area during the weekend to tell them of her plans. A formal announcement is expected early this week.

She had hoped to wait longer but political advisers convinced her she needed to move quickly to block potential opponents from entering the race.

Matsui's aides would not comment on her plans.
