Hamas to observe presidential elections

GAZA, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A Hamas spokesman Saturday renewed its call for a boycott of the Palestinian presidential elections and said its members want to be observers.

In its boycott call, Hamas said the election was an outcome of the Oslo peace accords signed in 1993 between Israel and the Palestinians.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, told UPI there will be dozens of Hamas observers supervising the elections in the West Bank and Gaza.

About 21,000 local observers and nearly 800 foreign observers, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will help to ensure fair voting practices.

Abu Zuhri said in spite of the Hamas boycott, "the Palestinian people are free to head for the ballot's stations tomorrow and vote."
