BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A man and his wife in Battle Creek, Mich., have been charged with getting men to pay to have sex with a 12-year-old runaway girl who was staying with them.
Police said the girl had come to their home looking for shelter, as she knew them from previous visits, WOOD-TV, in Grand Rapids, Mich., reported Wednesday.
The couple hired the girl out for sex with other men, police said, with the last time occurring in December for eight days.
Charged were 37-year-old Milo Burton and his wife, Julia.
"It's just kind of hard for me to accept that he actually did this," said Michell Griffin, who lives down the street from where the alleged crimes took place. She is good friends with Burton and can't believe the charges, the report said.
Police think there may be as many as five men who paid the Burtons to have sex with the girl in December.
