WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Incoming House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., said he would bring in Hill veteran Frank Cushing as the committee's staff director.
Lewis was named chairman Thursday by a vote of the House Republican Conference, defeating fellow Appropriations Subcommittee Chairmen Ralph Regula, R-Ohio, and Hal Rogers, R-Ky. The vote ratified a recommendation by the internal GOP leadership panel committee that determines committee assignments.
Cushing, a vice president at Cornerstone Government Affairs, spent several years as clerk and staff director of the Appropriations subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and independent agencies. He also spent nearly 15 years in various Senate staff positions. He will replace current Appropriations staff director Jim Dyer, who has not announced his future plans.
