KIEV, Ukraine, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Ukraine's defeated presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych may become opposition leader after the winner Viktor Yuschenko takes over the reins.
That is the assessment of parliamentary faction chief Stepan Havrish, reports the Interfax news agency.
"This is quite possible. With over 13 million voters behind him, he remains a national leader one way or another, and in expectation of 2006, will draw political forces that have no chances of reaching agreement with the new political regime and getting through to parliament," Havrish said.
The communists will undoubtedly form a new opposition in parliament, he said.
"Everything depends on talks being conducted at the level of the regional elite. The format of the opposition will depend on how the regional leaders manage to sign a deal with the new prime minister and president," he said.
