U.S. and China to discuss Taiwan

WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- China's minister for Taiwan affairs, Chen Yunlin, is scheduled to arrive in Washington Tuesday for talks with senior U.S. officials.

The State Department said the talks will focus on China's dispute with Taiwan, particularly on Beijing's proposed "anti-secessionist law."

At the State Department, he will meet with Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage Thursday.

The anti-secession law would offer legal grounds to resorting to using force from the mainland in case the leaders of Taiwan authorities create "Taiwan independence," according to the People's Daily.

The United States urges both China and Taiwan to engage in dialogue to peacefully resolve their differences.

Washington also advises them not to do anything that unilaterally changes the status quo or complicates management of this sensitive issue, the State Department said.
