WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- West Virginia Republican Rep. Shelly Moore Capito was given a slot Monday on the panel that determines how legislation moves forward in the U.S. House.
Capito's appointment to the Rules Committee came as the lawmaker was about to begin her third term in the U.S. House, which begins Tuesday. The lone Republican in her state's congressional delegation, Capito is the first West Virginia lawmaker ever named to the panel. She replaces former U.S. Rep. Porter Goss, R-Fla., who left Congress after being appointed director of the Central Intelligence agency.
"Shelly has worked remarkably well on behalf of her constituents," House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said. "With her new assignment, I am confident that she will keep working hard on West Virginia's priorities such as reforming the medical liability system, creating jobs and making quality healthcare more affordable."
Capito, the daughter of former West Virginia GOP Gov. Arch Moore and a potential U.S. Senate candidate, said the appointment was, "an honor and a privilege." She said she would would use her new position to "move forward an agenda that continues to expand prosperity and keep West Virginians safe."
