Annan: tsunami relief could take 10 years

NEW YORK, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has said the south Asian countries hit by the deadly tsunami could take up to 10 years to recover, the BBC reported Saturday.

Annan told the press of the "sheer complexity" of the relief effort, spread across a dozen nations.

Annan will travel to Indonesia Jan. 6 to discuss further aid in a meeting of world leaders.

At least 124,000 people have been confirmed dead since the tsunami hit. The United Nations has said the final death toll may exceed 150,000.
