WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The United States has received official requests for help from five of the 11 countries hit by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
The State Department said so far the governments of Indonesia, Maldives, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Thailand have requested international or U.S. assistance.
They are among the worst affected by Sunday's earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 100,000 people.
India is trying to deal with the disaster with its own resources; however, international aid organizations are also providing assistance to victims there.
The United States has pledged $35 million in initial aid and has promised more.
