Dallas police cameras to monitor revelers

DALLAS, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Dallas police will use surveillance cameras for the first time to protect New Year's revelers in one of the city's entertainment districts.

A network of 16 cameras has been installed on the roofs of clubs in the Deep Ellum area east of downtown, The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday.

Although security cameras are common in private business, this is the first time Dallas police have used the cameras. Other cities have used cameras in high-traffic areas.

Police Chief David Kunkle said the cameras not only provide real-time images outside the clubs, they provide an archive that can be checked later in the investigation of crimes.

Crime is down about 12 percent in the area from last year, but some high-profile fights and holdups have made some visitors nervous. Business owners have requested an increased police presence.
