CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Financially troubled US Airways scrambled Monday to reunite thousands of pieces of baggage with travelers after a dismal series of setbacks.
The avalanche of bad news began Thursday when bad weather caused flight relocations from Philadelphia along with a higher-than-average number of sick calls from its baggage handlers.
The airline's problems worsened Friday and Saturday, when the airline canceled 320 flights, partly because of high absenteeism among flight attendants.
Airline spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told USA Today the airline was forced Sunday to make eight special baggage flights from Philadelphia to its largest hub in Charlotte, N.C., where workers attempted to sort things out.
Joseph Tiberi, spokesman for the union that represents the baggage handlers, says he was unaware of a larger-than-usual number of sick calls, and said, "There was certainly no job action called for, and there is none taking place."
The airline has been operating in bankruptcy protection since September, and management has said it might be forced to close down early in 2005 unless it succeeds in drastically cutting expenses.
