NAZRAN, Russia, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Russian federal troops and law enforcers "eliminated" three alleged members of a militant group in the southern republic of Ingushetia, Interfax reported.
The three, who allegedly belonged to a group known as the Caliphate, were killed in the city of Nazran, said Maj. Gen. Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for regional headquarters of North Caucasus anti-terrorist operations, Monday.
The three were surrounded in a sweep operation by federal troops and law enforcers. When the alleged militants started shooting at the government forces, the police returned fire, killing the three.
Nobody was hurt on the federal side, Shabalkin said.
Ingushetia is one of the small republics in the area of southwestern Russia known as the north Caucasus. It is situated between North Ossetia and Chechnya. The Ingush people are closely related to the Chechens and speak a similar language.
