TOKYO, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Japan is preparing to distribute to every household information on emergency procedures in the event of an attack by weapons of mass destruction.
The pamphlets, to be distributed in 2007, are intended to prepare people for attacks by ballistic missiles, biological or chemical weapons, and for natural disasters including earthquakes and tsunamis, Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday.
Every local government is to formulate plans to protect citizens, including procedures for the evacuation and rescue of residents in the event of an armed attack on the nation.
The central and local governments will share responsibility for the evacuation of residents if the nation comes under attack.
Japan is following the example of other national governments. Information distributed by the Israeli government to its citizens, for example, reportedly minimized the damage caused by Iraqi missile attacks during the 1991 Gulf War.
