BEIJING, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Chinese criminal justice experts told a human rights symposium China should revise its approach to the death penalty.

The experts recommend rescinding the right of provincial courts to have the final say on executions, Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency, reported Sunday.

"When it comes to life or death, we have to be very cautious," said Wang Mingdi, vice president of the China Penology Society.

The Supreme People's Court is studying how to revoke the approval right of executions from lower courts, after there have been calls for reform.

Currently, all death penalty rulings, given by local intermediate courts, are submitted to the supreme court for approval, but in cases involving violent crimes like murder, rape and robbery, provincial higher courts are entitled to approve executions themselves.
