TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Uzbekistan held an election for Parliament Sunday, however, opposition parties were barred from taking part.

The Voice of America reported 500 candidates are contesting the 120 seats in Uzbekistan's lower house but virtually all are supporters of President Islam Karimov.

Sherzod Kudratkhodjaev, Uzbek Election Commission spokesman, said the opposition parties failed to meet registration requirements and some have been accused of falsifying signatures to qualify candidates.

Opposition leaders allege they were shut out of the election for criticizing Karimov's economic policies and human rights record.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is monitoring the election.
