DETROIT, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. has revealed it will present a diesel-electric hybrid car at Detroit's North American International Auto Show in Jan., the Detroit News reported.
The Mercury Meta One combines an electric motor with a twin-turbocharged V-6 diesel engine. The pairing reportedly causes lower emission levels.
"When a driver makes a high-power demand of a diesel engine, that's when it releases the most (nitrogen oxide), a smog-forming chemical," said David Wagner, Meta One's technology manager. "We're using the electric motor to give you that instant power."
The diesel fuel also causes less carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline.
"[The diesel hybrids] are very close, from an emissions level -- theoretically -- to what a fuel cell could produce," said Phil Martens, group vice president of North America product creation.
Ford has been working to develop vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, but the company has said they're decades away from production.
