NEW YORK, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- NBC's reality series "The Apprentice," struggling with declining ratings, has unveiled a new formula its upcoming third season, E! Online reported Sunday.

Whereas the previous two seasons featured groups based on sex, the third season will separate its players based on education level.

"We wanted to see what would happen if we pitted college grads against high school grads," Apprentice boss Donald Trump said in a statement.

Trump said the new formula "makes for fascinating television."

Ratings for the second season of The Apprentice, which concluded last week, were down 23 percent from season 1.

Season three of The Apprentice is scheduled to premier Jan. 20.
