PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands were stranded at U.S. airports Saturday after Comair canceled all of its flights and U.S. Airways misplaced several flights' luggage.
Comair called off all 1,160 flights booked for both Saturday and Sunday after the computer system used to book pilots for flights broke down, CNN reported. Comair spokesman Don Bornhorst said the airline will resume a limited schedule Monday. Comair did not reveal the cause of computer crash.
U.S. Airways said Saturday the company was transferring large amounts of lost luggage between airports by flying jets filled with suitcases.
"We had five aircraft fly from Philadelphia to Charlotte just carrying bags, no passengers, so that they could be sorted and returned to passengers," spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said.
"A confluence of issues" led to the problem, Kudwa said. In addition to severe weather, a record number of flight attendants and baggage handlers at Philadelphia International Airport called in sick Friday.
As a result, the company also experienced flight delays and cancellations Saturday.
