TEL AVIV, Israel, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Israel's Labor Party Thursday chose its slate to join the coalition of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, once the agreement goes into effect.
Veteran party chairman, former Prime Minister Shimon Peres, did not run in the elections. His seat at the cabinet table has been assured.
Knesset member and the party's former secretary-general Ofir Pines, 43, won most votes followed by Yitzhak Herzog, 44, a former Cabinet secretary.
Former Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, 68, former Industry Minister Dalia Itzik, 52, and former Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon, 48, will have portfolios.
Former Ministers Matan Vilnay and Haim Ramon would be ministers without portfolios.
"This choice could be a lever to choosing the Labor Party's new leadership," Pines told the Central Committee.
Itzik said the enlarged government could be formed next week.
Sharon noted the coalition agreement says the new government would remain in office until the November 2006 elections.
But, Itzik told Israel Radio, "Life is stronger than all the agreements and all the understandings."
