BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Former Argentine President Carlos Menem has returned to Argentina after a self-imposed exile in neighboring Chile, La Nacion newspaper reported Thursday.
Menem decided to come home after authorities canceled two arrest warrants on charges related to corruption. He has agreed however to cooperate in any investigation into alleged wrongdoing that occurred during his administrations.
Menem was accused of corruption and embezzlement of state funds during his 1989-1999 administration.
The former leader said in June he was forming a new branch of Argentina's leading Peronist Party and was intent on returning home to run for office in 2007.
