NY seizes $12 mil in fake-label goods

NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- New York police used basic intelligence by following tour buses to seize a record $12 million in counterfeit designer-label clothing.

Aside from the record seizure of operations that spanned four floors, authorities also closed the rest of the building on Broadway for code violations, the New York Post reported.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said selling inexpensive clothing is fine, but putting on a phony label on is another thing.

"Trying to pawn them off and delude people as to what they're buying is against the law," Bloomberg said.

Commissioner Ray Kelly told the Post "basic intelligence information" led police to the building, where tour buses would cue to buy knockoffs selling for half of retail.

Police said $40 million to $50 million in phony designer-label goods have been seized in New York in the past year, and think Monday's seizure put a major dent in the market even though no arrests were made.
