TOKYO, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Japan's Finance Ministry has allocated $510 million in its budget proposal for the construction of a second runway at Kansai International Airport.
Kansai, which is located approximately 31 miles from Japan's third-largest city, Osaka, is an offshore airport.
The budget for the airport, as revealed Monday, includes reclaiming an island for the new runway, which is expected to be completed by the end of March 2006, Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday.
Prior to the disclosure of the budget draft, Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki and Construction and Transport Minister Kazuo Kitagawa agreed Dec. 18 on the budget allocation in hopes of opening the second runway in 2007.
To achieve the goal, another $288 million for construction of the second runway and related facilities will likely be included in the fiscal 2006 budget, as demanded by the Construction and Transport Ministry.
