Ski racer killed in Colorado accident

VAIL, Colo., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A 13-year-old ski racer has been killed in a collision with a snowmobile on Vail Mountain in Colorado.

Ashley Stamp, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was skiing before the start of a slalom race Sunday when she was fatally injured, the Rocky Mountain News reported. She was pronounced dead at the Vail Valley Medical Center.

A resort employee working on the race course was driving the snowmobile about 10 mph uphill and had sirens on, according to initial reports. There were also reports that Stamp was wearing headphones at the time.

The Colorado State Patrol was conducting an investigation.

Tony Nunnikhoven, Stamp's former coach, called the teenager a "remarkable" skier who represented the United States in ski racing before she was 12. He said she would have qualified for the Junior Olympics this year or next.
