Cheating investigated in Texas schools

DALLAS, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A principal and two teachers have been reassigned at one of 200 Texas schools where a newspaper analysis found suspicious scores on statewide tests.

The state is investigating possible cheating on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test at the Sanderson Elementary School in Houston, The Dallas Morning News reported Monday.

A News study of more than 7,000 Texas public schools found suspicious gaps and unlikely one-year swings in the performance of more than 200 schools.

Sanderson finished in the bottom 2 percent of the state at the fourth grade on the math test, but had the best scores in Texas at fifth grade, with most students getting perfect scores.

The Texas Education Agency is investigating the cheating allegations at three school districts, including Dallas and Houston, because of the News analysis. The agency does not perform such reviews on its own, leaving the school districts to police themselves, an official said.

The Texas accountability system rewards schools and districts for high test scores, and there is immense pressure for schools and students to perform well.
