Egypt criticizes Israeli attacks in Gaza

CAIRO, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Egypt criticized Israel Saturday for its military attacks in the Gaza Strip, calling on it to stop provoking Palestinians.

The Egyptian foreign minister said Israeli operations in the Palestinian territories and "the continued provocations do not allow for" easing Palestinian-Israeli tensions.

Ahmad Abul Ghait was referring to the Israeli military operations that started in the Gaza Strip against the Palestinians following a wave of deadly missile attacks on Israeli targets.

Abul Ghait also welcomed PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' call for an end to Palestinian violence, saying it would ease Palestinian-Israeli tension and facilitate negotiations.
