Myanmar tightens San Suu Kyi's detention

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is concerned over the withdrawal of Myanmar opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's personal security detail.

The military government returned the 59-year-old Nobel laureate to house arrest in May of last year and recently said she would remain there until at least next Nov. 27.

"The secretary-general is seriously concerned to learn that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's personal security detail has been withdrawn, and the already limited access to her by her physician ... has been further restricted," a spokesman for Annan Thursday told reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York.

Annan reminded military authorities in Myanmar, the former Burma, of their responsibility to ensure San Suu Kyi's security and well-being.
