FEC to make fundraising easier for trade groups

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The Federal Election Commission is considering regulatory changes making it easier for trade associations to raise money for political activities.

Roll Call reported the rule changes were addressed at the commission final meeting of the year Thursday.

Specifically, trade groups would be allowed to collect money for political action groups through payroll deductions for employees of member companies, ostensibly putting them on a level playing field with PACs run by corporations and unions.

The proposal was approved 4-1 by the commission Thursday. Public comment on the proposal will be accepted before the commission takes a final vote next year.
