U.N. launches humanitarian warning site

ROME, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- U.N. agencies Wednesday launched an early warning Web site, giving alerts on drought, floods, storms, locusts, earthquakes and volcanic activity.

The site, HEWSweb, has dedicated pages for each natural hazards, including El Nino, as well as additional references and resources. In the near future, HEWSweb will also offer the opportunity to access and share information on sociopolitical crises.

HEWSweb represents a humanitarian partnership project developed by the Inter Agency Standing Committee to foster enhanced humanitarian preparedness, and it is supported by a variety of U.N. partners such as the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, the U.N. World Food Programme, the U.N. Children's Fund, the U.N. Refugee Organization, the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and others.

It has been conceived as the first global one-stop shop for early warning information.
