WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- One of the most outspoken members of the Sept. 11 commission may run for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee, he said Wednesday.
Tim Roemer, the former Democratic congressman from Indiana, told CNN that although he was "very flattered" by all the talk about his candidacy, "It's still early. I'm considering it."
Eight candidates are already declared to replace the outgoing chairman Terry McAuliffe when Democrats gather in Washington to elect a new leader on Feb. 12.
They are: former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard, former presidential candidate Howard Dean, senior Democratic Party official Donnie Fowler, outgoing Texas congressman Martin Frost, former Clinton aide Harold Ickes, ex-Dallas mayor Ron Kirk, New Democrat Network president Simon Rosenberg, and former Denver mayor Wellington Webb.
Roemer -- seen by most as a centrist -- said he came from "a red state, which I made purple" by winning eight elections there. He said the party needed to be a "a big tent" on divisive issues like abortion.
