PLO chief shuns armed resistance

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is calling for an end to armed resistance against Israel.

"Resorting to arms in the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation was harmful and should stop," Abbas, the main candidate for Palestinian Authority president, said in an interview published Tuesday in the Saudi daily al-Sharq al-Awsat.

"We need to work on calming down spirits in the ranks of the Palestinian people," he added in comments made at the end of a visit to Kuwait.
