WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A family planning group filed a lawsuit Monday to block a controversial anti-abortion provision in the 2005 spending law approved by President Bush last week.

The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association argues in its suit the amendment, authored by Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Fla., is not consistent with federal regulations for the preexisting Title X family program.

The program requires any organization receiving funding from the federal government to refer women to a place where they can receive an abortion if they request it.

Weldon's provision blocks states and localities that force health care providers, facilities, and other medical institutions to provide, back or refer abortion services from receiving federal funding.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
